is it worth spending $500 in plane tickets to visit your family for christmas when your fondest memory of the trip is watching three episodes of project runway since you don't have cable back home?

The math on this is easy. Subtract the cost of a monthly cable bill--say $75--and you're still $425 in the hole. The answer is a resounding no, at least in economic terms.
But, at the holidays, it's important to remember that your memories of Project Runway will last a lifetime. In which case, the answer is YES. Right?
